Denver, CO Mountain Wedding Photography: Marriage Matters (Communication Really is Key)

I pulled these engagement images of Susan and Nick for this post because I just adore the natural conversations that they are having in these photos.  One of the keys to great communication is carving out "us" time on your calendar to be alone with your spouse, reconnect, and talk.

It sounds cliche to hear relationship advice like "communication is key"...but there's a reason it sounds cliche.  It sounds cliche because everybody says it.  And maybe, just maybe, everybody says it because it's truth.  I think sometimes people walk into a relationship thinking that communication is easy and that it doesn't require work.  It may be easy for some, but I think they are the minority.

Early on in our dating relationship, Will and I had one of the best conversations we've ever had while on a walk with our dogs.  It shaped the way our relationship was built and how it has grown.  We talked about the good, solid relationship qualities where we as individuals were strong and where we were weak.  For me, I'm weak in the communication department.  (I know, shocking considering how much I like to talk!)  I am naturally a thinker.  When something happens that upsets me, I naturally go into thinking and processing mode.  I'm silent.  I process it and process it until I've processed it into something that it's not.  There's a brilliant idea. :) Can anyone else relate with me on this??  But...because I told Will a long time about my natural tendency to do this, he has become an expert at reading me and doesn't allow me to go there.  When I get silent, he is so good at asking me questions to get me to talk it through with him.  It's not always easy for me, but I can't even begin to tell you how much it has grown me as a person and us as a couple.  By talking through the situation, I learn the heart of my husband and I fall even more in love with him because of it.

Being a good communicator does get easier over time.  Below are a few practical tips that we have used.  Please note that I am not a counselor or anything remotely close to that.  I'm just a girl who loves marriage, loves my husband, and am passionate about doing everything in my power to be the best wife I can be to him.  And if the things I've learned on this marriage journey happen to help you too, then that's just awesome. :)

1. Be honest with yourself about your communication skills.  And not just how well you talk about the football game or your day at work.  When he says something that hurts your feelings, can you talk to him about it without a screaming fight?  (Because chances are, his intentions weren't to hurt your feelings, but he needs a chance to explain that to you before you jump to conclusions.)  These little, but serious, conversations are the ones that will prepare you for the big ones.  What if you have major financial trouble...or infertility issues...or major health trouble...or issues with your children?  It's incredibly hard for marriages to survive if you can't communicate through those intensely serious times.  Learning early on to communicate through the smaller, easier issues will make the bigger issues something you can handle together, not alone.

2. Spend some time really looking at the people who modeled marriage and communication to you...your parents, grandparents, or another couple.  Chances are your normal tendencies will be similar to those.  If they were great role models, be super grateful!  If they weren't, then be honest with yourself about what your areas of weakness might be and what you might need to do to improve.

3. Don't jump to conclusions and assume the worst.  The greatest question I've learned to use is... "When you said xyz, I interpreted it as meaning abc.  Can you explain what you really meant?"  This is what I meant earlier when I said I learn the heart of my husband.  The answer that he gives when I ask this question makes me realize over and over that he NEVER intends to hurt my feelings with his words.  It's always my incorrect interpretation.  I have to ask the question a lot less these days because now that I know his heart, it's much easier for me to interpret his words as he truly means them.

4. Make it a priority to carve out time in your schedules for "us" time so that you can reconnect and just talk.  Life gets hectic and it's easy to just let the time pass, going through the routine.  I love date nights.  A lot.  There's just something about being reminded that you're the center of his world and he's the center of yours.  It's a really, really good thing. :)

Aren't you dying to know what he's whispering in her ear??? :)  I love this image.
I would love to hear your feedback on this post.  What things have helped your communication?

:) Will and Stacey

Denver, CO Mountain Wedding Photography: Nikki + Allan's Washington D.C. Wedding

I'm not sure how many of you who follow along here on our blog are aware, but Washington D.C. has a very special place in our hearts.  This is where Will and I met, dated, got married and then spent the first few years of our married life together.  For us as a couple, it's our first home.  Without a doubt, our favorite part about D.C. are the friends we made while there.  D.C. is a funny place.  Virtually no one is from there.  Everyone is "transient"...meaning that they aren't from there, and they likely won't live there forever.  Because of this, the people you become friends with are your family...you spend weekends together, holidays, birthdays, everything.  It's pretty awesome, actually, because your relationships quickly go deeper than just friendship and you learn to really rely on each other as though they are your family.  I truly do miss that.

Will met one of his very closest friends through their time in the military together.  This friend immediately became one of my closest friends as well once Will and I started dating.  When his younger sister, Nikki, moved to town, she instantly became part of our "family" as well.  We feel like she is our younger sister and love her so very dearly.  Nikki moved to town to go to school to get her PA (Physician's Assistant) degree.  (Don't know what a PA is?  I didn't either.  It means that she is licensed to practice medicine under the direction of a physician or surgeon.  So basically she's a doctor who works under a MD.  In layman's terms...she's SUPER smart.) :)  Because of her area of study, she was doing medical volunteer work at a local fire station.  I remember when she started talking about this handsome fire fighter who she met and was interested in.  Obviously the rest is history.  Allan is an amazing man who is now her husband.

When Nikki called us to ask if we would travel back to D.C. to be their wedding photographers, we were so beyond excited.  It was so awesome to be able to capture every moment of their day, especially knowing them, their story, and their family so very well.

Nikki and Allan, we love you so very much.  Thank you for choosing us to be a part of your day, thank you for allowing us to be a part of your family, and thank you for being amazing human beings.  Can't wait until our next Mexico adventure together!!! :)

Denver, CO Mountain Wedding Photography: Nautical Stylized Shoot

Today is Valentines Day, and the fun pops of red throughout this Stylized Nautical Wedding shoot made it come to mind! Will and I had the opportunity to collaborate with so many awesome people to design this creative and fun wedding, which came together so beautifully. Also a BIG thank you to all of our models who made this such a great shoot!  Stylized shoots are so incredibly fun for us to do.  They give all of us vendors a chance to create something new and fresh (which feeds our creative souls) while at the same time hopefully providing potential Brides with new and interesting ideas for your big day.  It's a win-win really. :)

Cori Cook Floral Design did such a great job capturing the essence of this shoot with her beautiful flowers! We love how everything they did was so detailed and really brought the whole shoot together!

One of our absolute favorite parts of photography is being able to capture the details of the day. It is what makes every wedding so unique and special.  The amazing colors in this photo are so vibrant and happy!

Wow.  An absolute favorite photo right here.  Shadi, you are STUNNING!

Another one of the things we loved about this shoot was that is was at a Cherry Creek Marina. We loved shooting here, it was such a great change of pace and really let our creative juices flow!  And wouldn't you want this group of people as your friends/bridal party!?  Ya, they're pretty awesome.

We absolutely loved the wedding dress donated by Little White Dress Bridal!  We would definitely recommend this shop to any Bride looking for a beautiful dress for her big day!

Goofballs… Boys will be boys. :)

Erik and Amie, THANK YOU for being our bride and groom. :) We adore you and had such a blast working with you!!

Denver, CO Mountain Wedding Photography: Susan + Nick | A Key West, FL Destination Wedding

As I'm sure you've figured out, Will and I specialize in outdoor, mountain weddings, which we absolutely LOVE.  They fit our personalities, our interests, and we've learned down to a science how the light affects shooting in the mountains (which is very, very different than flat land). I'll be the first to admit, however, that when opportunities like Susan and Nick's Key West wedding roll around, we very much enjoy the change of pace...and scenery!

Susan and Nick had such a perfect destination wedding.  Just their immediate families and close friends, a perfect sunny beach day, and scenery to die for!!  They also had one of the sweetest First Look moments, which you can see on an earlier blog post HERE.

Thank you Susan and Nick for choosing us to be a part of your amazing day.  It was truly an honor for us to be your wedding photographers!!
